hintersee lake
Crystal-clear mountain lake in the Hohe Tauern National Park
The crystal-clear water of the Hintersee Lake in the Hohe Tauern National Park is the perfect natural mirror to reflect the stunning mountains and glaciers of what is without a doubt one of Austria's most beautiful regions. The nearby Gamsblickhütte hut serves excellent local food. The lake itself is slightly south of Mittersill, at the end of the Felbertal Valley. It can be easily reached by car; there is a car park within walking distance of the lake.
The Hintersee Lake enjoys a breathtaking location surrounded by steep rockfaces. The best time of day to visit is in the morning, when the sun's rays dance on the glistening surface. The tall mountains around the lake mean that it receives little sun in the afternoon. A good palce to stop for lunch is the Gamsblickhütte hut, which serves regional delicacies such as cheese, dried bacon and homemade bread.
Last, but by no means least, don't forget to walk a few metres further into the valley to see a number of small waterfalls as well as a spectacular large waterfall on the left-hand side.
